Final Speech Reflection
Overall, I'd say my speech was pretty well presented. As for the things I had done well on this speech I think my word pacing was well presented. I thought that the way I pronounced the words helped the audience understand the speech better. I also think my word pacing was well presented. I feel as though this was something that I had to work on throughout this semester in Public Speaking and I feel that in this speech I came through and provided the audience with a good pace in speaking. My volume was well put together which allowed the audience to be able to hear the point I was trying to get across which in this case was Childhood Obesity and how school lunches can prevent this from happening. I think a couple things I have to work on would first be the way I presented my speech, I feel like a Ted Talk with better visuals and statistics would have made it easier for the audience to understand my speech a tiny bit better. I also think i had a couple places where I lost the pace of my speech so focusing on this kind of skill while presenting a speech is an important factor for me to practice. Overall, besides these two errors I think my Final Speech in Public Speaking was well presented and I am happy with the results of it

Final Speech
The topic of childhood obesity in the United States should not only be decreasing but however is only increasing as we speak. The percentage of children with obesity in the United States has more than tripled since the 1970's. Today, about one in five school-aged children (ages 6–19) has obesity. A normal child goes to school 5 days a week and develops many habits through their actions at school because they are there so frequently throughout their childhood. However, the problem with this is that the eating habits that these young children develop in school is very malnutritional. For example, "The Agriculture Department doesn’t track spending to process the food, but school authorities do. The Michigan Department of Education, for example, gets free raw chicken worth $11.40 a case and sends it for processing into nuggets at $33.45 a case. The schools in San Bernardino, Calif., spend $14.75 to make French fries out of $5.95 worth of potatoes." The problem here is that these schools are buying products like chicken and potatoes which has their health benefits to them but are processing and turning them into things like fried chicken nuggets or french fries, etc. This not only hurts the children's health but limits their choices when eating lunch provided by the school because this happens to a lot of the products sold at school lunches. Which is a major cause to why these children are becoming obese at a young age. For example, from a personal experience of attending Glastonbury Public High School in Glastonbury, CT for 3 years, I was served products like fried mozzarella sticks, fried onion rings, boxed pizza, etc. All these things are included into the main course for the "hot lunch" provided at school for these kids which means they are pretty much forced to eat it or else they don't eat. On top of this the school's fruit and vegetable products are not always up to par either. As well as the hot lunches at GHS I also had to deal with the hardship of eating a mushy apple or things like very hard cooked broccoli that was not at all appealing to me, nor my classmates that were at school with me. This limits the student's in getting their nutritional value in the lunch because if the fruits and vegetables are bad than most likely a lot of the kids are not going to take them which means all they are consuming is the horrific nutritioned "hot lunch." These students are consuming the processed food which is only gonna contribute to becoming obese more and more each and every day. To build off this idea, student's need the nutrients in their lunches to be able to focus and succeed in class throughout the rest of the school day. How is this going to happen when they are consuming an awful nutritioned lunch? The answer is it's not. These student's need the right amount of nutrients within their lunch to get them through the day as well as being able to think and analyze problems within the concepts taught in class and to be able to perform in all types of afternoon activities after school whether it is a sport like hockey or even something like ultimate frisbee. In order to burn calories while exercising you have to be able to move frequently and consistently at a specific pace but without the right nutrients in your body while doing this, it's going to be extra hard to burn calories and lose weight. Which can also be a major reason to the cause of obesity. However, all these problems are caused by the poorly adjusted fixings school's have made to their school lunches which is the reason why there is a increase in obese children across America day by day. The school lunches need to be able to change their food products to less fried and processed food to more fruits and vegetables so that these obese children can become a lot more healthy as well as be able to perform well in class and during any after school activity. However, these fruits and vegetables need to be served up to their full potential and in the best shape as possible. It's bad enough when you give a kid an option of choosing a chocolate chip cookie or an apple, he or she is most likely going to choose the cookie. Well to decrease the likeliness of this happening, schools need to cut down on providing the sweets but also need to make sure the fruits and veggies are in tip top shape because it's hard enough to get young students to eat enough fruits and veggies let alone serve them fruits that are bruised or mushy or veggies that are cooked too much or too little. The whole view on the menu served for the students at schools across America needs to be upgraded to foods with the right nutrition to help contribute to a students success as well as the right foods that help contribute to these children in making sure they aren't gaining a ton of weight. As well as becoming obese over sweets which are only going to make the likely hood of becoming obese as a child more likely to occur.

In my speech I am going to talk about the specific effects school lunches have on children performing in classes and being successful in these classes as well as effects it has on the body of these students leading to obesity
"There are several direct effects that involve the immediate impact of nutrition on the daily performance of a student. Mental and behavioral problems can be traced back to unhealthy nutrition and poor eating habits"
"Nutritional deficiencies in zinc, B vitamins, Omega-3 fatty acids and protein have been shown to affect the cognitive development of children. There is also evidence to suggest that diets with high amounts of trans and saturated fats can have a negative impact on cognition. This will harm the ability of students to learn at a pace necessary for school success"

In my speech I am also going to talk about the awful nutrition values these schools provide for the students across America in their school lunches, I am going to back this point up with real life facts as well as a couple real life quotes from real life sources talking about the downgraded nutritional value in school lunches as well
"The Agriculture Department doesn’t track spending to process the food, but school authorities do. The Michigan Department of Education, for example, gets free raw chicken worth $11.40 a case and sends it for processing into nuggets at $33.45 a case. The schools in San Bernardino, Calif., spend $14.75 to make French fries out of $5.95 worth of potatoes."
"The money is ill spent. The Center for Science in the Public Interest has warned that sending food to be processed often means lower nutritional value and noted that “many schools continue to exceed the standards for fat, saturated fat and sodium.” A 2008 study by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation found that by the time many healthier commodities reach students, “they have about the same nutritional value as junk foods.”

In my speech I am also going to talk about the reasons why these children are obese and the main reason is eating unhealthy and consuming a high dose of calories per day. I am then going to back this up with real life quotes to support my claim
"A healthy diet follows the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans that emphasizes eating a variety of vegetables and fruits, whole grains, a variety of lean protein foods, and low-fat and fat-free dairy products. It also limits eating foods and beverages with added sugars, solid fats, or sodium."
"In contrast, consuming a healthy diet and being physically active can help children grow as well as maintain a healthy weight throughout childhood. Balancing energy or calories consumed from foods and beverages with the calories burned through activity plays a role in preventing excess weight gain. In addition, eating healthy and being physically active also has other health benefits and helps to prevent chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cancer, and heart disease."

In my speech I am going to talk about the rate of childhood obesity and how it has increased in the United States. It has had a very drastic increase and I want to present to my audience real life facts to back up my claim
"The percentage of children with obesity in the United States has more than tripled since the 1970s. Today, about one in five school-aged children (ages 6–19) has obesity."

In my speech I also want to present to the audience with some background knowledge on what you can inherit from being obese as a child such as specific deadly diseases as well as show them why it is so important to eat healthy as a child
"In the long term, childhood obesity also is associated with having obesity as an adult, which is linked to serious conditions and diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and several types of cancer."

In my speech I am also going to talk about what schools should do to prevent this life long condition to decrease from happening in the U.S. I am going to back my claim up with real life quotes to show the audience how important it is for the unhealthy nutrition in school lunches to be monitored fro the safety and health of their students'
"One of the main avenues that schools can use to positively affect health is also one most directly in line with every school’s mission: educating students. Nutrition and physical activity lessons can be woven into the curriculum-in core classroom subjects, physical education, and after-school programs-to teach skills that help students choose and maintain healthy lifestyles. In addition to teaching evidence-based nutrition and activity messages, school physical education should focus on getting students engaged in high-quality and regular activity."
"Serving healthy choices in the lunch room, limiting availability and marketing of unhealthful foods and sugary drinks, and making water available to students throughout the day are some of the ways that schools can help prevent obesity. Making these types of changes in the school food environment will be no easy task, however. In the U.S., for example, the Department of Agriculture recently finalized comprehensive new school meal guidelines that will increase vegetables, fruit, and whole grains and curb sodium, saturated fat, and trans fat. But due to political pressures, the agency was not able to fully implement the meal guidelines recommended by an expert panel at the Institute of Medicine."

Final Speech Assignment Plan
Topic,
The problem of childhood obesity and how schools can help childhood obesity as well
The problem of childhood obesity is a very important problem in the USA and I am interested in this topic because I want to help the children of today's society in making the right choices as well as becoming fit and able to have a level of confidence when looking at their body. I don't want these children feeling embarrassed of their weight and in order for this too happen it starts with the school systems in the U.S making drastic changes in the way they serve their food. Schools serve school lunches with little hesitation of worrying about the nutritional value that these kids are going to be consuming. Which has a very positive effect on why some children across America are obese. As well as the "main course" of lunch being usually a type of fried food or something like pizza, etc., schools also provide a ton of chips and cookies and some type of desert which also doesn't help especially on top of the badly nutritioned main course being provided for the children. From real life experience of attending public school at Glastonbury High School, public schools however do serve fruits and vegetables. The only problem is the fruit that I was provided with at GHS was always in terrible condition wether it was a mushy apple or a bruised banana or even really chewy broccoli. It just didn't agree with my taste buds which is why I think so many of these kids do not eat the fruits and vegetables at school and decide to stick with all the unhealthy choices. In my eyes, these schools need to focus on the more nutritional type of lunches being served as well as focusing on making sure the fruits and the veggies are in the best condition possible to be served so that the kids can be healthy as well as finish the rest of their day off strong because without nutritional energy, you are not going to succeed as often in the classroom as well as in a sporting event or whatever these children do after school. This would help tremendously for these suffering children suffering with obesity. Childhood obesity is a very big problem and can easily be fixed starting with the school systems and what they serve for school lunches and even breakfast if they serve that as well. In my speech I am going to talk about the improvements that need to be made to these school lunches, the benefits of these changes towards childhood obesity, a real life experience as well as some real life facts to spice it up alittle bit. This is a major topic in today's health society and it is something that needs to be fixed

Debate Unit Reflection
Overall, on the broad scheme of things, I think my improvement as the Debate Unit progressed increased a lot. I think one of the biggest concepts when performing in a debate that I learned personally was to argue what the other person was stating. In other words, if they were to say something about M and M's containing a lot of calories, when it's my turn to speak I should argue the point about the calories instead of arguing something totally different about M and M's. This tool as well as skill helped me increase my grade in these debates throughout the time in this unit especially when it came to the point where we were doing the 1 on 1 mini debates, this was a huge skill that came into play during those sepcific debates just because it was so hard to think of information on the spot. On top of this concept, I also learned to mix in real life facts as well as a real life experience and even a quote stated by a famous person or an expert on the topic of the debate. This allows me as a speaker in the debate to provide the audience as well as the opposing team with a taste of logos and pathos which spices up what I am trying to say as well. This is a huge skill when debating because it allows the audience as well as the opposing team to really think about what I am arguing and also really allows them to paint a picture in their head's when I add the real life experience into my point. Adding real life facts is key to backing up what I am trying to say. These facts also make it easier to prove my point and more importantly for the judges to come up with a winner because you can't argue real life facts, they are what they are. Like I said before, as the unit went on I think my ability to be able to debate increased tremendously. Throughout the first 2 mini debates we did in class, it was more of a free for all. It was 2 on 2 where each team was just blerting out information. After these 2 mini debates were completed, I learned that in order to have a more formal and more organized debate we'd have to have an opening statement, followed by our rebuttals and then ending with a closing statement. As we began to perform the debates in this type of style, it allowed me to learn and improve on my debating skills because it made it easier to argue each other's points as well as getting my point across to the opposing team. The 2 formal debates allowed me to put all my knowledge into the opening or closing statement whichever one I was assigned. This allowed me to receive a good grade because I was able to follow the correct guidelines in completing a full statement. These guidelines were, add real life facts, add a real life experience and also add a quote stated by an expert on that specific topic. On top of this, if I was doing the closing statement I also had to be alert during the rest of the debate in order to hear the opposing teams points so that I could argue them in my closing statement, another key skill that I learned throughout this process. Lastly, the final mini debates we performed in class allowed me to put all the tools and skills that I learned on debates together and to just let it all out there. These quick mini debates also allowed me to think of information quickly on the spot so that I could argue my point thoroughly throughout the mini 6 minute debate (each person had a total of 3 min to talk). Overall, I think that my ability to debate increased tremendously throughout this Debate Unit and I think these skills and concepts that I picked up will help me in the real world as well as future debates in school as well. I really enjoyed this unit and I encourage Ms. Guarino to keep doing this unit with future Public Speaking Classes

Debate Review, How We Did as Well as Which Team Won and Why
I think as a whole we did pretty well. We provided facts as well as a real life experience on completing homework and the benefits. This allowed us to provide a taste of logos as well as pathos which in having a good debate, these 2 very important topics need to be included. Overall, I think our arguments were very strong and this allowed us to rebuttal well also
In conclusion, I think our team takes the win here because I think we provided more valuable facts and arguments but it also did help us seeing that our part of the debate was alittle easier to perform because we were provided with more details as well as research

Research for Banning Homework Debate (closing statement)
Homework should not be banned from schools. Homework is nothing but a beneficial factor for
students across America. Homework is not just a "time hogger" kind of thing. In other words it
provides an increase in 4 very important character traits as a young child becoming an adult. These 4
traits include, responsibility, time management, perseverance as well as self esteem. It teaches the
kids how to become sure of their priorities in life. A pole for the Associated Press earlier this year
found that in such 35 studies, about 77% of parents find the link between homework and achievement as positive.
If these students want to have a bright future, do homework. However, if they don't want to have such
a bright future, don't do homework, that's your choice. Homework provides students with an
advantage to learn the curriculum and what they are doing in class a lot more easier because by doing
homework they are provided with a lot more time to practice and improve on a certain skill or
concept. From real life experience of being a student at Cheshire Academy i've noticed a very big
improvement in my grades when I complete my homework because the most important thing about
taking time to do your homework is being able to understand the concept being taught to you. I was
having a lot of trouble with a specific Spanish verb tense and by doing the homework this allowed me
to do well in class the next day as well as the test we had based on this specific verb tense.
Homework does nothing but create good habits for students and increases their chances in doing well
in a certain class as well as on a specific test or quiz. It teaches students a life lesson in time
management especially if they are buried in a lot of homework in one night or even a week, it allows
them to be able to plan out certain amounts of time to do certain assignments which sets these
children up for becoming an adult in learning how to manage your life as a parent or husband and if
you end up being neither of these then just time management in life in general. Homework motivates
students to do well. A lot of kids take homework very seriously and this allows them to receive the
motivation to want to do well on the homework in a specific class. Not only is this beneficial for the
student to understand a specific concept but it allows them and gives them the advantage in the class
as well as increase their grade tremendously in the class by doing their homework. Homework is a
beneficial factor and creates students a greater chance in succeeding in school as well as learning and
improving upon real life character traits. A quotes stated by Annie Murphy Paul, an education expert
from Concordia University reads, "homework must be a deliberate practice. Students and teachers are
both fully aware of homework's purpose and point. This leads to one of the most important points
about homework, it is not effective without student buy in. Both common sense and research show
that the only chance a student has to benefit from homework is when the student actually attempts
completion, meaning that in addition to being effective, students have to be motivated to complete it.
That motivation only comes when students understand how and why homework is important." Even
though it takes up so some time in student's lives, it helps tremendously and should not be banned

Opening Statement Which Includes Research
At 18 years old, you can buy cigarettes as well as tobacco. Along with alcohol these are 2 types of addictive drugs. In this case, it does not make any sense when allowing people to be able to buy these types of harmful, addictive substances at the age of 18 and not allowing people to purchase alcohol until they are 21. When you reach you're 18th birthday you are officially tried as an adult. If you get pulled over and are doing something illegal you get arrested, at 18 you are officially legal to buy a home and live on you're own, at 18 you are officially allowed to vote as well as buy your own land. At 18 you are officially responsible for yourself which is why when people say "putting the drinking availability age off until 21, saves lives," makes me very confused. If you are officially responsible for yourself then you should also be able to control yourself when drinking especially if you are required to drive that day as well as doing something else that requires any type of physical activity. However, if you do not wanna do so and you want to abuse alcohol and are not able to control yourself then you are going to have to pay the price and learn a life lesson. The basis of the decision of the drinking age in the U.S should not be based on safety because if that was the case then things like tobacco, cigarettes as well as even buying a house and living on your own, etc. should be put off until the age of 21. The learning of being punished for your uncontrollable actions is more beneficial for it to happen at 18 than it is at 21. Yes, I am not going to persuade you and tell you that Alcohol does no harm because it does but so do all of the other drug substances available for people at the age of 18 which in my eyes doesn't make any sense. Alcohol in the United States of America should be legal at 18 years of age

Reflection of Revised Ted Talk
The main focus in improving my Ted Talk was minor fixes. An important factor in doing well on a project or even a test or quiz in school is reading and following the directions as well as each and every step in receiving a successful grade for whatever you are working on. Unfortunately, I did not read the directions as well as I should have which is something I really tried to focus on when revising my Ted Talk. One major important thing I did not do was creating my project so that it is between 3 and 5 minutes long. Unfortunately, my first version of my Ted Talk was only 2 minutes and 24 seconds long. This received myself 2 points out of 10 which is an 8 point loss when trying to complete a simple direction and in the overall scheme of things that was a big loss in the end. On top of this I also forgot to post the link onto blogger so that my teacher could easily find my Ted Talk on YouTube. This received me 2 points out of 10 as well which was also another 8 point loss, which killed my overall grade as well. Unfortunately, towards the end of my project I forgot to include my citations for my information found on top of the pictures used in my presentation. This received myself 0 points out of 10 which was the major killer to my overall grade. Just between these 3 things, I lost a total of 26 points and originally received a 117 out of 160. Just by improving these 3 things to their full potential I receive a 143 out of 160 which looks much better than before. However, with more time and effort put into this project I probably would have started over again and focused more on the pointers I was given for the overall outlook my teacher had on the public speaking part of my Ted Talk. I consistently moved my head which was probably a nervous twitch for me throughout my speech which could potentially distract the audience when viewing this Ted Talk so my body language and nervousness when presenting my speech is something I would work on if I put more time and effort into this project. On top of this the content of my Ted Talk is something I would have also worked on. My takeaway as well as leaving the audience with something to "think" about would be 2 specific things I would focus on when working on improving the content of this speech. Lastly, more fully organized points in different sections would be something I would also try and improve. I received an 8 for this specific skill and part of the rubric but a 10 would be something definitely worth shooting for if I put more time and effort into this Ted Talk. Overall, I think I did well for this being my first personal Ted Talk with some minor errors in content and throughout the actual public speaking part of my speech. However, most importantly, next time following specific easily presented directions to receive a full score up to it's full potential instead of losing easy points for not so smart errors. I enjoyed this project and I think it's something we should do in the future

Ted Talk Reflection
Overall, for my first Ted Talk type of speech I can definitely say it was a learning experience. Not just doing this type of open public speech but the benefits of learning and trying to figure out how to use Imovie for this and further projects is something that helped me tremendously because it is such a useful tool. As for the Public Speaking aspect of my speech I think I did well. I think I really had a good deal of confidence when giving my speech which allowed me to pronounce my words fluently. I think my posture when giving my speech, sitting up straight showing the audience that I wanted to be there presenting this speech to them was something I also did well. This also allowed me to give off a good, strong volume for the audience to hear and understand my speech at. As for things I think I need to work on for the next Ted Talk we do would be one, the formatting of my speech. I think for my first time on Imovie it was hard for me to know the ins and outs of how to use the app but I think as time goes on I will get more and more used to using the app which will allow me to add in different effects to spice up my speech a little better. Another thing I think I need to work on is the speed of the words coming out of my mouth. I think during my Ted Talk I found myself speaking a little fast at times but at other times I found myself speaking at the right pace. I think finding that ability to keep the same pace and speed of my speech throughout my whole presentation is important for me to have a full well rounded speech. Overall, for my first Ted Talk I think I did well but unfortunately I do have some things I could work on but nobody really has a perfect speech, there is always something you are able to work on for next time

Ted Talk Layout
Imovie,
Ok so what I wanna do is I am going to have someone record me like a real speech, every time I am talking im gonna have someone recording me so its gonna be like a real ted talk of me talking live and when I show a picture its gonna be a quick one but just to give the audience a picture in their mind of what I am talking about but my main thing here is ever clip is gonna be of me talking and saying a part of my speech and I have 8 slides
Slide 1, title and name of speaker

Slide 2
Unfortuantely, the best sport to ever be created, hockey, is not very appreciated in the United States of America. Not only should the sports fan of America appreciate it more but these people dont realize what it takes to make the NHL
Slide 3,
From real life experience of playing the game of hockey, as a player you face a large amount of adversity. These NHL players played in many different leagues, spent hours and hours outside working on their stick handling and shooting and gave up many opportunities to go to the beach to chill with their friends, just to get the opportunity to play on this large stage and from my opinion, American sport fans do not appreciate this and dont take the time to appreciate the fact that these guys poured their heart outs for the sport of hockey all through their childhood
Slide 4,
However, in defense to the sport fans across America, hockey is not just an American sport like for example, football, baseball, basketball and even a sport like nascar is. Hockey is viewed all around the world including countries like Canada, Russia, Sweden, Czech Republic, etc. My focus throughout this speech however is the sports fans across America and their view on the NHL and in this case, the NHL definitely takes the loss when comparing the NHL to the NFL, MLB or NBA
Slide 5,
For example, the 2017 Super Bowl game "climbed to tie the second most watched Super Bowl ever for an average of 113.7 million viewers." Compared to the 2016 NHL Stanley Cup when "the sixth game of the 2016 Stanley Cup featuring the Pittsburgh Penguins and the San Jose Sharks averaged nearly 4 million viewers (3.948 million)." Even though these are the most important games of the year for both leagues, the average amount of people who tuned into NBA regular season games is just another small detail to back up my point
(Picture)
Slide 6,
"The most watched game this season across any network was the Christmas NBA finals rematch between the Golden State Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers on ABC, where it averaged 11,100,000 viewers." "Blues and Balckhawks opener had a 0.5 final rating and 905,000 viewers on NBCSN"
Slide 7,
On top of all this, the NHL is barely presented and broadcasted on Sports Center. If I decide to turn on the TV and turn on ESPN to watch Sports Center, for every 15 basketball or football highlights, you might see one NHL highlight. In my eyes, this is wrong and dont really think it is fair for the NHL to be treated like this by the sport fans across the United States
(Picture)
Slide 8,
However, it is tough for the NHL to fix this because it is such a popular world wide sport. I think something the league should work on would be to pay more money to have important games previewed more by American sport fans, whether its commercials, making sure ESPN is showing more of their leagues highlights and also notifying the American sport fans when a big NHL game is going to be on TV. This would benefit the NHL in making more money as well as the sport fans across America getting a better taste of what the best sport to ever be created is like

In my speech I am going to compare the amount of viewers that tuned into the 2017 Super Bowl to the amount of people that watched the 2016 Stanley Cup so this website gives me real life numbers from the 2017 Super Bowl to make this comparison
"The total is not for broadcast alone, as it does include 1.7 million streaming viewers and an additional 650,000 from the Spanish-language simulcast on Fox Deportes"
"the game climbed to tie the second-most-watched Super Bowl ever for an average 113.7 million viewers"

In my speech I am also going to compare the amount of people who tune into a regular season NBA game compared to the amount of people who tune into a regular season NHL game so this website gives me real life numbers backing up my statement about the amount of people who tuned into a regular season NBA game in 2016
"The most-watched game this season across any network was the Christmas NBA Finals rematch between the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers on ABC. It averaged 11,160,000 viewers"
"ESPN televised its most-watched (non-Christmas) regular-season game in more than two years, since 2014, when the Golden State Warriors set the NBA record for most wins in a season against the Memphis Grizzlies (April 13, 2016: 3,649,000 viewers, p2+)"

In my speech I am also going to compare the average amount of people who tune into a regular season 2016 NHL game compared to the amount of people who tune into a regular season 2016 to 2017 NBA season regular season game. Therefore, this site provides me real life numbers about the average viewers that tune into a 2016 NHL regular season game which is why I am using it

The main reason for my speech is to show and express how hockey is not as important to American sport fans as a sport like football, basketball or baseball is so the reason for this website is to provide me with reasons why hockey is not as appreciated
"In Canada though, hockey is king and part of its national identity but in the U.S. it’s often an afterthought in many markets. The NHL has been trying to expand its popularity for years and has seen some gains but still struggles in many of its markets"
"Even in hockey’s peak months of May and June, as we get closer to deciding the Stanley Cup winner, hockey coverage is constantly superseded in the U.S by NFL coverage, be it the draft fallout or offseason storylines, by the NBA playoffs and early season MLB stories all seem to push hockey aside"

Ted Talk Proposal
I am going to talk about the reason why hockey is not as appreciated as other sports throughout the United States of America. I am going to back this up with research on for example, how many viewers tuned in to watch the Super Bowl and how many viewers tuned in to watch the Stanley Cup. On top of this, just how many people in America watch regular season NHL hockey games compared to how many people in America watch an NBA or MLB regular season game. I am going to then back this up with real life experience, for example on Sports Center how they barely show NHL highlights, its always baseball, basketball or football highlights. How they hype up a big basketball, baseball or football game and barely hype up the American sports fans when there is going to be an important NHL hockey game on. My takeaway for the audience is going to be for them to realize how the NHL is less favorited as an American sport than a sport like baseball, basketball, football and even golf. Also and most importantly what the NHL has to do to put themselves in a different position, looking at the way their league is viewed by American sport fans

Ted Talk Speeches, "good one" and "bad one" With Reviews of Each
"Good one:"

Diana Nyad: Never, ever give up
Review:
I consider this speech my good speech. Looking at Diana Nyads speech from a public speaking skills type of overlook, she does many things tremendously well. First off, I think the most important factor that contributes to this well rounded speech would be her confidence while speaking. This allows her to deliver a very understandable speech to the audience. Nyad is also very engaged and into her speech while she is presenting it which creates a clearer and more interesting take from the speech for the audience. For example, the way she moves her hands when talking about specific things or the way she emphasizes specific things through body movements is something I really liked about this presentation. Her pronounciation and diction of words is also a key factor to why this speech is so well rounded. By doing this it allows the audience to understand what she is trying to say very easily and clearly. Lastly and most importantly besides having a great deal of confidence is her eye contact towards the audience while speaking. Diana Nyad does this very well which allows her to present the speech instead of reading the speech and in this case she already had it memorized which allowed her to perform this skill so well. As far as the content towards this speech goes, from my point of view I really like the takeaway. The quote "never, ever give up" is very inspiring to me and she really supports this quote with evidence from her personal life to back it up and let everyone know that nothing is impossible. Nyad really didnt think she could have swam all the way from Cuba to Florida but with the inspiration and desire to accomplish this goal at the age of 64 motivated her to not give up until she had done it. Which motivates me and a lot of other people while listening to this perfectly spoken presentation. Overall, the takeaway and content of this speech just adds on to how well it was presented

Chinaka Hodge: What will you tell your daughters about 2016?
Review:
I consider this speech my bad one. Although it is very hard to choose a "bad" Ted Talk, there were a few public speaking skills that in my eyes this speaker lacked in terms of presenting a speech. One thing I realized was her eye contact. To differentiate this Ted Talk from my "good" one, this speaker had a script and one thing I noticed was that although she was speaking very clearly and had great diction and pronounciation of words, this lady could have made a little more eye contact with her audience. The reading of her script I think slowed her down and was holding her back from being able to make more eye contact with her audience and in this case I believe that being the presenter in a Ted Talk you should have your speech memorized so that it is easier to present it especially since you are being recorded and are going to be put on a professional website. One more public speaking skill that Chinaka lacked in while speaking was the pace of her speech. I feel as though she was speaking a little too fast which made it a little more difficult for the audience and myself to stay engaged into the speech. If she slowed down a tiny bit, I think the audience and myself would have been able to move a long more smoothly with the presentation. However, as far as the content goes, I think Hodge presented and left the audience with a clear takeaway which is what a good speech should consist of. The only errors from my point of view came from focusing on the specific public speaking skills that make a speech so well rounded

"I Wish" Speech Post Evaluation
Overall, plain and simple I think my second speech was much better than my first one. I think my pacing was a lot better and more importantly I think my pronounciation of the words in my speech were articulated more carefully. The thing I needed to improve on the most in my second speech was eye contact towards the audience, my first speech I basically read the whole time with a little bit of eye contact here and there. However, my second speech I memorized basically my whole thing so it was much easier to make this much needed eye contact with the audience, overall I think this was the skill I improved on the most throughout this speech
Although I improved on my pacing and pronounciation I think these are two skills that I still can improve on, based on my first two speeches. Which is two very important types of skills when it comes to public speaking and the audience understanding the speaker clearly but other than this I think I improved on almost everything when it comes to the different types of skills in public speaking
What I noticed from watching my peers for what makes a good speech would definitely most importantly be eye contact. This allows the audience to see that the speaker is engaged in the speech and is also showing that he or she is speaking and not just reading which keeps the audience engaged and interested as well. I would also say posture is second most important because without good posture the audience feels as though the speaker is not interested in the audience and most importantly what he or she is talking about which turns the audience off. Lastly, pronounciation and diction is key when public speaking so that the audience is able to hear every word that is included in the speech which also allows for the audience to be more engaged in the speech as well

"I Wish" Speech
The city that never sleeps, that's where I wanna be. Although it costs a lot of money, every time I step foot in this place, I tell myself, "this is where I wanna live."
(look up)
From visiting Central Park, to roaming
around Times Square, to staring straight up at the Empire State Building. Visiting the NHL store or taking a walk down to look at the most famous arena on earth.
(look up)
The hundreds of thousand tourists and the warm wonderful smell of the roasted peanuts being sold on the sidewalk stands, this city is like no other and the opportunities and activities are endless
(look up)
I visit my uncles apartment maybe every two months and every time I need to head back to CT, I cant do it. There's something about it, there's something about that beautiful skyline all lit up at night.
(look up)
My
favorite time to visit is Christmas time with all the lights and ornaments set up, all the stores and historic skyscrapers carefully decorated, you cant beat it.
(look up)
Most importantly, you cant beat the fact of living in the best city in the world. There's no where else id rather be.
(look up)
I think about it every day and the picture of seeing myself living in this amazing city motivates me to do well in school and to go to college.

Speech Reflection
A good speech gets the point you are trying to make across to the audience. A good speech consists of ways to keep the audience engaged. Most importantly, a good speech makes eye contact and shows the audience that you know what you are talking about instead of reading while reading with much confidence. Pronunciation of words and being able to stand straight up while talking in front of a big crowd is very important as well. The audience as well as these things presented above, has to be able to understand what you (the speaker) is saying as well, not mumbling is key in this situation
Throughout my "I Am" Speech I think I mastered most of these things. However, I did speak a little too quickly for my likings. I think if I slowed down a little while reading it would have definitely been a better presented speech but as a whole, I think the pace I spoke at was pretty good but has potential to be better in my next speech. I also think instead of reading full sentences at a time without making eye contact with the audience, I should have read a sentence and then looked up and then read another sentence and then looked up which in this case would have slowed down the speech a little more as well as allowed me to make more eye contact with the audience. I think my posture was well, I stood up straight but also had some room to become a little more relaxed while being up there. I think my confidence while speaking could have also been a tiny bit better. By having confidence when speaking, it allows the speaker as a whole to present the speech better in every aspect and catergory of skills when public speaking. However, overall I think for my first speech in this class, all around it was a good one with some minor errors along the way that could be fixed during my next speech and most importantly during the rest of my speeches throughout this semester in Public Speaking
"I Am" Speech
I am in love with the game of hockey. I remember the day i turned on the TV, sitting nice and cozy,
cuddled up next to my dad, watching my first NHL hockey game
cuddled up next to my dad, watching my first NHL hockey game
(pause, look at crowd)
Ever since then I couldn't stop, I
fell in love with the game and its something that has really shaped me into who I am today
(pause, look at crowd)
I remember that day I came home from kindergarten and dad told me he signed me up for learn to
skate. Nothing but butterflies going through my stomach realizing that this was the first time I was
going to be stepping on the ice
(pause, look at crowd)
When dad and I got into the rink, I looked around at all the people
skating, realizing that i wasn't going to be the only one out there and beginning to get really nervous
(pause, look at crowd)
We sat down, dad took out my skates and put them on me. Wearing these for the first time in my life,
they felt a little weird. "Alright son," he said, "get out there." I took one stride and never started
crying harder in my life but my dad refused to let me off the ice, so I figured Id keep going
(pause, look at crowd)
Ever since then, I cant thank my dad enough. I found my passion, my life and something I will love
till the day I die. My dad believed in me and because of that, I couldn't be more grateful

Public Speaking Blog
My name is Shane Ward from Glastonbury, CT and I am a junior here at Cheshire Academy. I've decided to take public speaking because ill admit, I get nervous when it comes to talking in front of big crowds. Which is why I took this class, to gain the confidence to do so. I am a hockey player and also play baseball in the spring on top of playing spring hockey as well. I have two sisters, one older and one younger and I live with my sisters, mom and dad in Glastonbury because I am a day student at CA. Something I really consider myself being is a hard worker, I definitely do my best to strive to be the best I can be on and off the ice. School work, grades and learning is something I also definitely take pride in and also want to do very well in. When I grow older I would like to be an accountant because I enjoy doing math and I take pride in doing it. However, to be successful in getting a good job or even just talking to someone or a group of people in general is very important. Which is why I'm here, to gain the skills to do so. Throughout the experience of taking Public Speaking, id like to develop and fix my posture when speaking, also work on my pronunciation of long and difficult words or wordings in my speeches and lastly and the most important, gaining enough confidence to do so. I enjoy learning and I think by the end of this semester my skills of being able to be a Public Speaker will increase tremendously
